MODEL UN
Bridging the Education Gap and Creating Global Citizens
Model United Nations is an authentic simulation of the UN General Assembly, UN Security Council, or other multilateral body, which introduces students to the world of diplomacy, negotiation, and decision making.
At Model UN, students step into the shoes of ambassadors of countries that are members of the UN, from Argentina to Zimbabwe. The students, better known as “delegates”, debate current or historical issues plaguing the world. They prepare draft resolutions, plot strategy, negotiate with supporters and adversaries, resolve conflicts, and navigate diplomatic rules of procedure – all in the interest of resolving issues that affect or have affected the world.
During the lead up to this conference, students will have the chance to research the particular topic they are addressing. The topics, whether current or historical, usually involve a multitude of moral and cultural issues which students will have the chance to resolve. Whether they are solving world hunger, religious, economic, or racial violence, equality in wealth or opportunity, or creating trading agreements, Model UN delegates learn how the international community can view these concerns and act on them.
Model UN delegates also look closely at the needs, aspirations, and foreign policy of the country they will be representing at the event. The insights they gain from their exploration of history, geography, mathematics, culture, economics, and science help develop their world view and contribute to the authenticity of the committees once the actual conference gets underway, and ensures a lively and memorable experience.
Model UN not only involves young people in the study and discussion of global issues, but also encourages the development of skills useful throughout their lives – particularly focusing on developing strong skills in research techniques, writing, public speaking, problem-solving, conflict resolution, compromise, and cooperation.
The four best members of each committee will be awarded with a certificate acknowledging their accomplishments, as well as a physical gift going along with it. These awards are very useful for college applications, as their performance in Model UN is weighted by colleges and universities greatly.
